What is WiFi Calling? Phones That Support VoWiFi?

Let's talk about the latest hype here in India, Airtel and Jio have recently launched a new service that is VoWiFi (Voice Over WiFi). You may have seen on your phones VoLTE (Voice Over LTE) which promises enhanced data speed and better audio quality during calls. Now you may have heard earlier a few weeks in December about Airtel rolling out VoWiFi (WiFi-Calling) when enabled on your device lets you make calls using WiFi connection if you are connected to any.

What is Wifi Calling (VoWiFi)?

To understand VoWiFi, first, let's see how VoLTE works. VoLTE uses data to make calls and not the GSM network like how it worked in 2G and 3G. Just to enhance this technology the data connectivity in WiFi-calling is now made with the WiFi network instead of a mobile network to which a user is connected.

What are the Benefits of WiFi Calling?

The benefits of VoWiFi over VoLTE are many. You know that WiFi connection as compared to a mobile network is more robust and faster as it is powered by a strong wired broadband connection. This leads to lower call drops and calls can be clearer and crisp even if the 4G mobile signal is not good enough.

Another benefit can be said though it is not much. While making calls on WiFi you save some data on your LTE network. However, calls on the LTE network do not consume much data but something is being saved which is good.

Another benefit that is not for the users but for the service providers like Jio and Airtel who are rolling out this service is that calling over WiFi will help reduce the traffic on their network.

Does My Phone Support WiFi-Calling (VoWiFi)?

Here is the list of devices that supports Wifi-Calling as of now and the list will grow with future software updates.

Airtel and Jio Wifi-Calling Price

This is good to know that this service is totally free and Jio and Airtel are not charging a single penny for this. As said earlier, Wifi-Calling helps mobile network providers in decongesting their network so ideally, they should not charge anything from their consumers which by the way they are already doing.

However, Jio allows its users to make wifi-calls while roaming, Airtel refrains itself from doing so as of now. Airtel says, “No, you cannot use Wi-Fi calling in a national roaming scenario. However, we are working on expanding the functionality for national roaming soon.”

Adding to this, all the STD calls are free with Wifi-calling, however, you have to pay the usual rates for ISD calls.

How To Enable Wifi Calling on iPhone?

  1. Tap Settings
  2. Tap Phone
  3. Tap WiFi Calling
  4. Enable WiFi Calling

How To Enable Wifi Calling on Android?

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap Connections
  3. Enable Wifi Calling
There is one thing to note that OnePlus phones are not supported by Jio Wifi Calling but are supported by Airtel. For the users who do not see the Wifi calling option on your phone need to update the phone software and if you still do not see that option, be patient, your phone will also be added in the coming future updates.
