The New macOS (10.15) Catalina Released - See All The Features

macOS 10.15 Catalina Features and Release Date

Another version of macOS that is macOS 10.15 has been announced by Apple recently in WWDC 2019. The newest macOS has been named as Catalina.

With Catalina, iTunes will be dead and Apple will be pushing three apps which are Apple TV, Apple Music, and Podcasts. Most of the iPhone users must be aware of these apps. To manage the synching with your mac, you need to do this with the finder in your mac.

Talking about the new Catalyst project, Apple is hoping that developers will bring their iOS apps to Catalina.

Earlier in WWDC 2018, Apple confirmed about making it easier to bring the iOS apps to macOS in 2019 which we are going to see with macOS 10.15 Catalina where developers will try their code on macOS as well. This sounds exciting, isn't it?

After the summary lets talk about everything in detail.

What is the Newest Version of Apple's macOS and what Apple will Call It?

macOS Catalina Desktop

The newest version of macOS is macOS 10.15 which Apple is going to call Catalina. This time the name comes from a Californian Landmark. Catalina is an island off the coast of California, southwest of Los Angeles.

macOS Catalina Launch Date

Apple announced macOS Catalina on WWDC June 2019. The latest operating system will available to download in late September or in October 2019.

If you are a geek and don't want to wait that long, you can download the beta of Catalina now if you are a registered developer. If you have signed for the public beta, you can get macOS 10.15 in July.

New features coming in macOS 10.15 Catalina

Let's talk about the features that Apple revealed in WWDC 2019 about Catalina.

What is Project Catalyst?

This is the most exciting thing that developers around the globe are waiting for. As announced in WWDC 2018, with the new macOS 10.15 developers will be able to try their hands on apps on macOS which they developed for iOS.

This is going to benefit both developers and as well as users as developers don't have to write and manage code for the same app on two different platforms. Also, users will get to see more apps on macOS platform.

What is Project Sidecar?

Side feature will let you use your iPad as a second screen along with your Mac.

How You can Use your iPad as a Second Screen?

macOS Catalina Sidecar with iPad Pro

You can connect your iPad with your Mac or connect wirelessly via Bluetooth and Continuity. You need to use your same iCould account on both the devices to use this feature. When iPad is connected with your Mac, you can use it as an extended screen or you can mirror your Mac's screen to your iPad.

This works only in one way, means you can share your Mac's screen to iPad but you cannot share your iPad's screen to your Mac.

Will Your iPad Work With Sidecar?

Sidecar will work with any iPad running iOS 13 alongside a Mac running macOS Catalina.

Apps That Will Work With Sidecar

According to Apple, any special support is not required to use the apps with Sidecar. It should just work. However, if any developer wants to take advantage of iPad's touch screen and Apple Pencil, it could be easily done.

Apple announced that the following apps already work with Sidecar:
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Affinity Photo & Affinity Designer
  • Cinema 4D
  • Maya
  • ZBrush
  • CorelDraw
  • DaVinci Resolve
  • Final Cut Pro
  • Motion
  • Painter
  • Principle
  • Sketch
  • Substance Designer & Substance Painter

Apple Apps with macOS Catalina

As mentioned earlier, Apple is ditching iTunes with macOs 10.15. iTunes is getting replaced by Apple TV, Apple Music, and Podcasts.

Apple Music

Leaving behind the cluttered iTunes, Apple Music will focus only on Music. You can choose from the extensive list of catalog that Apple has if you are a subscribed user. Also, iTunes fans need not worry about their libraries. They will stay and you can enjoy your music. Apple Music will have

macOS Catalina Apple Music

  • A cleaner design
  • You can import your old iTunes libraries
  • The new search feature will help in locating the song easily.
  • A mini player

Apple Podcast

Apple Podcast will come with some awesome features which are
  • There are apparently 700,000 shows in Apple’s Podcast catalog.
  • Trending section for popular shows and Top Charts.
  • Users will also be able to search for particular content, such as a particular show, topic, guest, or host
  • You'll also be able to pick up from where you left off on another device.

Find My

The Find My Phone app has been renamed Find My, which makes sense given that the iPhone isn’t the only device you can find with the software. You can now locate your stolen Macs that are closed and offline.

Apple explained how Find My can locate Apple devices even if they are offline by using Bluetooth to send signals which can be picked up by nearby devices. Its location can then be relayed back to you. This is all encrypted and anonymous and because it just piggybacks on tiny bits of data it won't use up battery or impinge on your data allowance. It's basically a way to crowd-source your device's location.

Screen Time

Screen Time is coming on Mac as well. Here you will get a detailed report about how much time you are spending on websites and apps across all your devices.

Parental Control

In the newest version of macOS, you can manage all your family devices from ScreenTime on your Mac. Here is some of the things that you can do with this:

  • Schedule downtime.
  • Setting app limits and choosing which websites can be accessed.
  • You can manage contacts list of your kids deciding whom they can communicate with.
  • You can choose to reach them in a crucial time even during downtime.
There are other apps like Photos, Safari, Notes, Reminders and QuickTime player to be updated.

Bye Bye 32-bit Apps

Apple has been warning about the ending support for 32-bit apps and macOS Mojave was the last os to support the 32-bit apps. With Cataline coming in picture, 32-bit apps will become a past.

How you can check for 32-bit apps on your Mac?

How to find 32 bit apps in macOS

  1. Go to Apple Menu
  2. About This Mac
  3. System Report
  4. Software > Applications
  5. Look in the last column to see whether it’s a 64-bit application.

What Macs would be supported by macOS 10.15 Catalina?

Here is the list of Macs that macOS 10.15 Catalina will support:
  • MacBook (2015 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (2012 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (2012 or newer)
  • Mac mini (2012 or newer)
  • iMac (2012 or newer)
  • iMac Pro (from 2017)
  • Mac Pro (2013 or newer)

Security Features coming with macOS Catalina

Apple ID

Apple is going to make some changes to the way you can access your Apple account via Mac. You'll be able to get to your Apple ID info via System Preferences to gain access to account details, security details, payment and shipping info, and more. You'll also be able to review and update iCloud settings, manage or upgrade your storage plan, and view your subscriptions (and those being shared via Family Sharing). In addition, you'll see a list of all the devices that are signed into your account, including when they were last backed up and their Find My status.

Security
macOS has a large number of security features and one of these is Gatekeeper. In the Catalina update, Gatekeeper will also be capable of scanning apps while installing and after installation for security issues.

  • Apps would require permission to access user's documents and desktop folders and other storage places like clouds and external removable media.
  • Users will be notified before any app tracks key presses and try to capture a screenshot.
  • The system volume will be kept separate from all other data from Mac to prevent overwriting of system files.
  • Hardware peripherals previously ran code in macOS using kernel extensions, in Catalina will run separately from the OS, so they can’t affect macOS is something goes wrong.
Including FindMy and T2 chip powered activation lock makes it quite secure.
