What is Internet of Things (IoT)?

What is Internet Of Things (IoT)

At the heart of various technological innovations over the years, lies the Internet. And among all technological developments, Internet of Things (IoT) is that breakthrough which was the umpteenth request of public or users to get everything on their smartphones. Today if you can control your water pump, electricity, cars or any other automated systems which have electronic instruments installed connected with microcontrollers. The idea of using the Internet differently and by diverse effects (normally ‘thing’ or ‘object’ viewed as any possible items in the real world that could join the communication chain) is expected to upswing the model of IoT.

Generally, IoT is considered to be simply a means of connecting different sensors to a network. It is important to look at IoT over a broader canvas of numerous IT related and futuristic technologies. Ambient Intelligence and Cognitive Technologies are anticipated to have a major impact on the future of Information Technology (IT). Other tech domains like Fog Computing, Distributed Computing, Cloud Computing, Big Data, and Blockchain are expected to trigger the IoT industry. IoT is transforming the everyday physical objects that surround us into an ecosystem of information that will enrich our lives. From refrigerators from parking spaces to houses, the IoT is bringing more and more things in the digital fold every day, which will likely make the IoT a multi-trillion dollar industry in near future. Recently, Finland is trying to make a tie-up with India and one of the MoU is for IoT. Annie Mari Virolainen, Minister of Foreign and Trade Development discussed the same through the news media. This itself declares that governance is finding this sophisticated technical buzz to enhance and establish a modern methodology of barter trade.

First sensors or devices collect data from their environment. This could be as simple as temperature reading or as complex as a full video feed. Sensors can be bundled together or sensors can be part of the device that does more than sense thing. For example, one’s phone is a device that has multiple sensors (camera, accelerometer, GPS, etc.) but the phone is itself not a sensor. Next data is sent to the cloud, but it needs a way to get there!

The sensor devices can be connected to the cloud through a variety of methods including cellular, satellite, WiFi, Bluetooth, low-power wide area networks, or connecting directly to the internet via Ethernet. Each option has a tradeoff between power consumption, range, and bandwidth. Choosing which connectivity option is best comes down to specific IoT application, but they all accomplish the task: getting data to the cloud.

Once the data gets to the cloud, the software performs some kind of processing in it. This could be very simple, such as checking that the temperature reading its within an acceptable range. Or it could also be very complex, such as using computer vision on video to identify objects. Next, the information is made useful to the end-user in some way. This is could be via an alert to the user. For example, a text alert when the temperature is too high in the company’s cold storage. Also, a user might have an interface that allows them to proactively check in on the system. Another example, a user might want to check the video feeds in their house via a phone app or a web browser. However, it is not always a one-way street.

Depending on the IoT application, the user may also be able to perform an action and affect the system. For example, the user might remotely adjust the temperature. And some actions are performed automatically. Any adjustments or actions that the user makes are then sent in the opposite direction through the same medium of the channel of communication i.e. from the user interface to the cloud and finally to the sensors/ devices to some kind of change.

How IoT is important?

Everything is wired up or connecting wirelessly – architecture, energy efficient sensing, secure networks, quality of service, new protocols, participatory sensing, data mining, GIS-based visualization. It will simply make all the above-discussed verticals will be in our fingertips. The global industrial structure is poised to undergo a fundamental structure change akin to the industrial revolution as we usher in IoT. IoT has no doubt proliferated the concept of automation systems in today’s world. 

IoT is the key which has brought us closer to real-time data interaction and analysis to give us update of every microsecond’s information. IoT will in itself bring conglomeration of a new form of data into the system to give an edge to Cognitive Systems and Artificial Intelligence. IoT has the potential to impact everything from the new product opportunities, to shop floor optimization, to factory worker efficiency gains that will power top-line gains and bottom-line gains. IoT has given proper signals to its user that with the use of certain sensors along with the network device attached to the sensors will give the user what to do next. Whether to continue to keep the switch on the water pumps. If the water level goes up some sort of notifications will arrive and accordingly user sending the signal to switch off even from a distant area. Thus, we can make these come more to reality using some meager devices.

Future Aspects:


Artificial Intelligence (AI)

IoT if attaches with blockchain will bring security to the system if the data is fetched from cloud servers. IoT if get mingled by Artificial Intelligence (AI), will in itself able to take minor decisions linked with the system and waiting for any user response over the alerts. Whatever technique blended with IoT will bring more power and take it closer to the real world. IoT as huge aspirations can come into combat military field to ambush the enemy badly. Before enemy will get any info about the attack, he will become of his history as the place where he will become new graveyard to settle out new dead bodies without any human effort. If today you are hearing the stories of smart cities then you cannot deny that IoT won’t be a contributor of this to bring into the practical world
